Responsibility
RESPONSIBILITY – Coffee that stands up to ethical scrutiny
At ROST, responsible coffee production is a shared goal throughout the production chain, from farmer to consumer. We source our coffee beans as directly as possible from responsible operators and we know the exact origin of our coffees. The majority of our coffee (90% in 2023) comes from Fair Trade and organic certified farmers whose farms follow the principles of sustainable development. Our Experimental series coffees are produced on environmentally friendly small farms, and we buy the beans directly from farmers or responsible small green coffee traders. This way we can guarantee the quality of the coffee and fair compensation for the farmers.

HOW TO ASSESS A COMPANY'S RESPONSIBILITY?
What does responsibility really mean in coffee production? Is one responsible product enough if 95% do not meet the same requirements? Do company certificates withstand ethical scrutiny, or are they just greenwashing without external oversight? At ROST, we believe that responsibly produced coffee means transparent, sustainable and fair operations throughout the production chain. We choose our partners according to these values, so that we can ensure the quality of the coffee and fair treatment of farmers.
FAIR TRADE – Fair Trade certified coffee
Fair Trade certification means that the products have been produced in a fair and sustainable manner. The Fair Trade system was developed to support the position of small farmers in developing countries in international trade. ROST's Fair Trade certified coffees offer consumers the opportunity to positively impact the lives of farmers and their families in developing countries by improving working and living conditions.
ORGANIC COFFEE – Organically produced coffee
ROST organic coffees are produced in accordance with controlled organic regulations, based on EU organic legislation, which is supervised in Finland by the Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira. The organic label is awarded when at least 95% of the product's content comes from organically produced ingredients, and no genetic modification is used in the production. Our organic coffees guarantee pure and organic coffee without compromise.
CLEANLINESS – Environmentally friendly roasting in Lauttasaari
ROST's coffees are roasted at our Lauttasaari roastery using an environmentally friendly Loring Kestrel S35 roaster, which uses up to 40% less gas and greenhouse gas emissions than traditional roasters. Our consumer packaging is made from recyclable plastic, and its carbon dioxide emissions are offset. We offer our HoReCa customers a Zero Waste concept.

Why Zero Waste?
By choosing ROST's Zero Waste concept, your company can significantly reduce its environmental impact and operate more responsibly. In our concept, instead of plastic packaging, you receive your coffee in food-approved 5 kg barrels, which can be used multiple times and significantly reduce packaging waste. Each barrel saves more than half a kilo of packaging waste compared to plastic packaging, and our average HoReCa customer reduces packaging waste by about 30 kg per year.
How does the Zero Waste concept work?
We deliver filled barrels directly to your door, and collect empty barrels when you return. The barrels are space-saving, stackable, and a convenient way to maintain a responsible operation. The Zero Waste concept is used for all our coffee types, except for Expreimental coffees, and is specifically aimed at HoReCa customers.
